LG Polls in Islamabad Scheduled for Nov 30
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Friday the schedule for local government elections for the federal capital.
LG polls will be held on November 30 in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) as per the revised schedule issued by the ECP. Further, the ECP will start the process of delimitation of constituencies from tomorrow.
Nomination papers can be filed from October 24 to October 27, the source said, adding that the scrutiny of the papers will be done from October 31 to November 4. Further, the final list of the candidates is expected to be issued by ECP on November 4.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) had directed the ECP to issue the schedule of LG polls in the ICT on Friday (today). Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman, appearing before a three-judge bench, informed the apex court that the rules for LG polls in Islamabad were framed and notified on August 20. The ECP Director General (Legal), Muhammad Arshad informed the bench, “We will issue the schedule tomorrow (Friday).” However, he failed to provide a specific polling date.
Earlier, on July 8 on the request of the ECP, the court had allowed the commission to issue a revised LG election schedule for Islamabad, which was supposed to be held on July 25. “Needless to say, in view of the fact that the expected legislation is not as yet in place, the ECP may notify a revised schedule for the said elections if this becomes necessary on account of delays in Parliament”, the three-judge bench, headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, had said
