MUZAFFARABAD: At least one person was killed and eight others wounded on Saturday in a political clash in the Kotli area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The clash occurred in the Nakial bazaar area, as a PPP procession was enroute to their rally venue, which is scheduled to be held today.

Activists from the ruling and the opposition parties proceeded to pelt stones at each other, resulting in the death of Munshi Khan, a PPP worker.

The injured were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Kotli.

General elections in AJK are slated to be held in summer 2016.

The AJK government had notified on Thursday the appointment of AJK High Court Chief Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal as the chief election commissioner (CEC), in accordance with the advice of the AJK Council.

Under the region’s interim constitution, the CEC is appointed by the government on the advice of the AJK Council headed by the prime minister of Pakistan.

The PML-N, forming the opposition in the AJK Legislative Assembly, joined hands with Muslim Conference (MC) in January, and stated that they had joined hands to play an effective and aggressive role to expose Peoples Party government’s “corruption and maladministration”.

The PML-N has 11 and MC has five legislators in the currently 48-member assembly, and the office of leader of the opposition is held by PML-N president Raja Farooq Haider.
