India Watchful Over Kashmiri Students Supporting Pakistani Cricket Team in WT20
KOLKATA: Indian Home Ministry has ordered police to submit reports about Kashmiri students studying in different educational institutions, particularly in Kolkata city.
The move is aimed at keeping a watch on the Kashmiri students as they would support Pakistan Cricket team, which will play its matches in Kolkata during the ICC World T20. The tournament is commencing from today.
Colleges across Kolkata have received a notice by the police chief saying, “Please let me know that students, whose residential addresses are under Jammu and Kashmir, studies in your institution for onwards transmission to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” Indian media reported.
It is worth mentioning here that the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, the Students Union President of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, by Indian police had sparked protests by students across India against the Narendra Modi government. Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested under sedition charges for organizing a function to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru on February 9, this year.
Jadavpur University in Kolkata was one of the institutions that led the protests in the city.
