Journalist Shot Dead in Tank District
DI KHAN: A local journalist was shot dead on Tuesday when unidentified persons opened fire on his motorbike in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district.
A Police official confirmed, “Zaman Mehsud, a local journalist, was shot dead in Tank District.”
Mehsud was enroute from his home in Gomel towards Tank city on his motorbike when unidentified persons opened fire, which injured the journalist. The gunmen managed to flee the scene of crime.
Shortly after the attack, Mehsud was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Tank, and later the District Headquarters and Teaching Hospital, DI Khan, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Mehsud hailed from South Waziristan but was settled in Tank’s Gomel area with his family, where he worked as a journalist at Daily Umat.
Attacks on journalists in Pakistan are not uncommon and have been on the rise in recent times. Last month, two unidentified armed men shot dead senior journalist Aftab Alam in a drive-by shooting incident in Karachi. Alam was outside his house in Sector 11-C of North Karachi when he was shot by unidentified assailants.
With 14 journalists killed across Pakistan in 2014, the International Federation of Journalists confirmed that Pakistan has been the most dangerous country for journalists in the world.
