A university in Lahore, the capital city of the Pakistan’s eastern Punjab Province, has declared a state of alert amid fears of an attack by the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group.

Provincial Police spokeswoman, Nabila Ghazanfar, said on Wednesday that security had been increased around the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) after it received a threatening letter from the ISIL militants.

"We are taking the threat very seriously due to the prevailing security situation," Ghazanfar said, adding, police officers are also investigating whether the letter had been a hoax or not.

Meanwhile, Tanvir Qasim, UET public relations officer, noted that the university received the letter via posted mail from an unidentified source, stressing that its contents were unknown to him.

A police official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, further said the ISIL terrorists had threatened to bomb the university.

The ISIL controls some parts of Iraq and Syria. The terrorists are engaged in crimes against humanity in areas under their control. They have terrorized and killed people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadis.

Several commanders of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group have allegedly joined ISIL. The ISIL terrorists are also said to have been distributing pamphlets in Peshawar, some areas of Lahore, and Indian-administered Kashmir.

Back in February, at least eight people were killed and several others wounded in a bomb blast in Lahore. The TTP later claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The explosion occurred close to the police headquarters in the center of the city, which is the power base of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
