Commission Agent Shoots Three Laborers Dead in Lahore
LAHORE: Three labourer were shot dead allegedly by a commission agent and his guards in Kahna vegetable market on Sunday.
Police said commission agent Haji Shafiq parked a tractor-trolley in front of some makeshift shops in Kahna Sabzi Mandi (vegetable market) where labourers Javed, Ahmed and Faqeer Husain of Okara were employed.
After the labourers demanded “parking fee” from Shafiq and his men late on Saturday, both parties exchanged harsh words.
However, other market workers intervened and convinced both parties to settle the issue on Sunday morning.
During the reconciliation meeting on Sunday, both sides again exchanged words following which Shafiq and his guards opened fire, leaving the three workers critically injured.
The injured were shifted to the General Hospital where Javed succumbed to his bullet wounds, while the two others were said to be stable.
Following the incident, vegetable market workers and the families of the dead and injured labourers gathered outside the hospital on Ferozepur Road and lodged protest against police by placing the body on the road. The protesters blocked the traffic for two hours or so, causing inconvenience to motorists.
They also occupied the Metro Bus track by scaling its iron fence and thrashed the Metro Bus Authority workers when they tried to clear the track.
They chanted slogans against police for failing to arrest the suspects.
Soon a large number of policemen reached the spot, took the body in custody and cleared the road for traffic after assuring the protesters of “strict action” against those involved in the incident.
The authorities had to suspend the Metro service for some time due to the protest.
The police shifted the body to the Jinnah Hospital mortuary for the postmortem examination and registered murder case against Haji Shifq and his guards.
Model Town Superintendent of Police (SP) (Investigation) Faisal Mukhtar said initial investigation showed that the man was killed over monetary dispute.
He said special teams were formed and raids were being conducted in different areas to arrest the commission agent and his guards.
