ISLAMABAD: A petition to launch an FIR against Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz and his spouse has been filed with Islamabad High Court (IHC) for their sympathies with the proscribed self styled IS (Daesh).

Syed Khurram Zaki, a resident of Karachi, contended in his petition that the students of Lal Masjid’s Jamia Hafsa seminary released a video in the social media, praising the self-styled Islamic state and inviting it to Pakistan.

The petition cited the secretaries of law and justice, defence, interior, director general Inter Services Intelligence, Pakistan Rangers, chief commissioner and the police Islamabad as respondents.

It claimed that the cleric and his spouse had violated several provisions of the law by supporting the banned outfit.

The petitioner had earlier filed an application with the additional district and sessions judge Islamabad seeking a direction to the police for the registration the FIR. The judge, however, rejected the plea, saying the petitioner had no ‘locus standi’ (right to speak) to seek such a direction against the cleric.
