LAHORE: Rafique Rajwana, a former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator took oath as the governor of Punjab on Sunday, Media reported.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Governor House presided by Lahore High Court Chief Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik and was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif among other leaders.

After taking the oath Rajwana spoke to media and thanked the PML-N leadership for appointing him as the constitutional head of Pakistan’s most populous province, and vowed to work for the betterment of the province at large, particularly for the welfare of the people of South Punjab.

Earlier on Thursday, he was appointed as the Punjab governor by President Mamnoon Hussain.

The position fell vacant after Chaudhry Sarwar resigned from the post on January 29 after blaming the PML-N government of bad governance. He then joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Sarwar had earlier censured the Foreign Office for US President Barack Obama visiting India and not Pakistan and termed it a “failure” on part of the country’s foreign policy.

Hailing from southern Punjab, Rajwana has been active in the politics of the region.
