Govt approves Rs480mn for eid salaries of Pak Steel employees
ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Thursday has approved a sum of Rs480 million for payment of one month’s salary to the employees of the Pakistan Steel Mills.
The minister conveyed the approval under his capacity as chairman of the Cabinet's Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and termed this use of funds as a special case.
The decision was taken on humanitarian grounds with the hope that it will enable the employees of PSM and their families to take part in Eidul Fitr festivities.
In March, the Sindh High Court had directed PSM to immediately pay salaries to its employees following a petition filed by PSM workers against non-payment of salaries for the past four months.
Over 16,000 employees had not been paid salaries despite repeated promises by the management, forcing the employees to live below the subsistence level.
PSM, in June, had sought from the federal government a Rs4.5 billion bailout package, including Rs2 billion for four months salaries (May-August).
