Fire Engulfed 50 Shanties in Gulshan-e-Iqbal
KARACHI: Fire gutted at least 50 shanties at Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Azizbhatti police station here on Thursday.
According to the details, fire engulf in the shanty town located behind the Federal Urdu University where fire tenders were rushed to extinguish the fire immediately.
According to chief firefighter Ehtisham, an unknown caller informed the department that a fire engulfed the shantytown located in the Gulshan area when firefighters rushed to reach the area but unable to reached on the spot timely because of the massive traffic jam due to the exhibition at Expo Center.
At least four fire brigade vehicles were immediately dispatched to the spot and later six more vehicles were sent to extinguish the fire. He said that some 50 huts were completely gutted in the fire before they reached on the spot while firefighters managed to secure over 150 other shanty houses. Inhabitants were managed to escape while two including a six year old girl and a man, Ghulam Nabi, slightly sustained burns injures and rushed to the hospital where doctors terms the condition of both out of danger.
Chief firefighter further said, the fire was brought in control within three hour and the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
Later, the inhabitants descended to the streets and staged a protest against the land mafia. The protesters blocked all major arteries and alleged that the fire was a pre-planned incident. They said, the land grabbers were threatening them for dire consequences, if they did not evacuate the land. Later, police high-ups rushed on the scene and after negotiation, the protestors dispersed. Meanwhile, another similar incident of fire occurred in Gulshan-e-Iqbal police remits. Police said that fire broke out in a foreign food chain due to the generator explosion but the fire was timely extinguished.
