Appeal to PM for bringing back Family Member from Indian Jail
HYDERABAD: The family of a man languishing in an Indian jail since Feb 2013 has appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and relevant officials for help.
Abid Qureshi, who accompanied the family, told journalists at the local press club that his brother, Mohammed Yousuf, was booked in a fake currency case by Indian customs officials after a heated argument between them. He said Mr Yousuf, along with his wife and son, had proceed to Munabao by Thar Express on Feb 23, 2013. He was first cleared by customs officials but another officer approached him asking about the money he was carrying.
He stated that he had Rs30,000 Indian currency with him to meet the expenses at a wedding in India.
The officer objected to the amount and then claimed that it was counterfeit currency.
Eventually, Mr Yousuf was produced in a Jaipur court, which found the currency genuine and acquitted him. However, he was kept in prison in a separate ‘scuffle’ case.
Mr Qureshi said that the officials were demanding bribes which had led to the heated argument but it was termed a ‘scuffle’ to register a separate case.
