An Indian fighter jet today accidently dropped five bombs over Gugdi town in Rajasthan's Barmer district. The sound of the explosion could be heard in a 10 km radius. No casualties have been reported as of now. Barmer is a village which is very near to Pakistan border.

The Barmer district administration said in a statement that it received information at 1 pm of loud blasts in village Gugri under Panchpadra police station. To inquire, Additional Superintendent of Police, Balotra, Jassa Ram Bose as well as SHO of Panchpadra police station and other police officials were sent to the spot.

“Upon inspection, 4-5 kon-numa (angular) objects were found and the pieces were collected,” the administration said in a statement.

“Similar objects were also found in village Panawda, under police station Baytu, which were collected for investigation purposes.”

However, the Indian Air Force in its statement said that its radar had spotted an unidentified balloon-shaped object and that a fighter jet was launched to intercept the object.

According to sources, radars of the Indian Air Force picked up the object between 10:30 and 11 this morning and launched at least one Sukhoi fighter to make an aerial intercept.

The AIR Force is now searching for the remains of the balloon.

Meanwhile, a team of air force officers has travelled to Gugdi, a village in Barmer, where villagers complained that "material" dropped by a fighter plane had caused cracks in some houses. The Air Force has however denied that its jets have dropped anything.

“Prima facie, the objects do not seem to be bomb-like. (The district administration) will write to the IAF to inquire how the blast happened and what these objects are,” police said.
